Vul. Bandery, 14 – Academic Gymnasium ID: 1028
In the past, it was the First Ukrainian Academic Gymnasium (1906). It is located at the corner of S. Bandera and Arkhitektorska Streets.
Story
The gymnasium was founded in October 1784 by order of Emperor Joseph II as part of Lviv University (academy). This is where its name, "academic gymnasium," comes from. In 1773, when the Jesuit order was abolished in the Austrian Empire, a six-grade gymnasium with a two-year lyceum was established on the basis of the Lviv Jesuit College (academy). In 1848, this gymnasium, where classes were conducted in German, was to be transferred to the Ukrainian language. The first matriculation exam in Ukrainian was taken by gymnasium students only in 1878. Ilya Kokorudza, Anatol Vakhnianyn, Omelian Ogonovsky, Ivan Verkhratsky, Mikhail Voznyak, Filaret Kolessa, Ivan Krypiakevych, and other outstanding educators worked at the gymnasium.Architecture
Built in the Secession style. The building has three floors with a basement, is brick, and plastered. The interior layout is mainly corridor-type with rooms on both sides. The composition of the main facade is symmetrical, with two side projections topped with high Secessionist attics. The first floor is emphasized by linear rustication. A profiled string course runs between the first and second floors. At the level of the second and third floors, the facade is divided by rusticated pilasters, topped with a row of Ionic capitals, a coat of arms cartouche, and garlands. The windows between the pilasters are recessed into the wall and separated by pilaster strips. On the first floor, the windows are decorated with keystones, on the second floor with linear pediments, and on the third floor with stylized stucco moldings and inserts. The entrance portal is decorated with rusticated pilasters and a triangular broken pediment, on which the stylized coat of arms of the city of Lviv is placed. The building is topped with a profiled cornice, emphasized in the openwork parts by a row of Ionic capitals.People
